What changes the price
“It depends” is a true answer and a useless one. Here is what it actually depends on, so you can see where your project sits before anyone visits your home.
- The material itself
- The single biggest lever. Within any category — carpet, luxury vinyl, hardwood, tile, laminate — there is a wide spread between entry-level and premium, and the difference is usually durability and warranty, not just looks.
- How much you’re covering
- Square footage drives materials, but the per-foot rate is not flat: larger continuous areas are more efficient to install than the same footage split across several small rooms.
- The shape of the space
- Stairs are priced per step and are the most labor-intensive surface in most homes. Closets, angles, doorways, and tight rooms all add cuts and seams.
- Removing the old floor
- Tear-out and disposal of existing flooring is its own line item. Glued-down material and tile removal take more labor than pulling carpet.
- Subfloor prep
- Uneven, damaged, or squeaky subfloors need leveling or repair before new flooring goes down. This is the item most often missing from a quote that looks unusually cheap.
- Pad and underlayment
- Carpet pad and hard-surface underlayment come in grades. Better pad meaningfully extends carpet life, so it is worth understanding rather than defaulting to the cheapest option.
- Transitions and trim
- Thresholds between rooms, stair nosing, quarter round, and baseboard work are small individually and add up across a whole-home project.
- Furniture and appliances
- Moving furniture, disconnecting appliances, and working around built-ins adds labor. Handling some of it yourself is one of the easier ways to reduce a quote.

Timeline depends on product availability and your project details. When you choose in-stock options (especially carpet), scheduling can often move faster. After measuring, we’ll give you a clear install window.
Many carpet installs can be completed quickly, while hard-surface projects can take longer depending on prep and layout. Your specialist will give you a realistic timeline after the measure.
We’ll give you a prep checklist, but generally: clear breakables, plan for pets, and make furniture arrangements based on the rooms being replaced.
Materials, durability, and performance
If comfort and quiet matter most, carpet can be a great fit with the right fiber and density. If spills and muddy shoes are constant, luxury vinyl is often a strong choice. We’ll recommend based on the rooms you’re doing and how you live.
