A thicker wear layer means better scratch and dent resistance. For homes with large dogs or heavy furniture, aim for at least 20 mil.
Sweep or dry-mop daily in high-traffic areas. Damp-mop weekly with a pH-neutral vinyl floor cleaner — avoid harsh chemicals, abrasive scrubbers, and steam mops, which can damage the wear layer over time.
Use felt pads under all furniture legs and replace them every six months. Place mats at exterior doors to catch grit before it reaches the floor. Trim pet nails regularly — while LVP is scratch-resistant, deep gouges from large dogs can still mark thinner wear layers.
A quality luxury vinyl floor installed in a typical Utah home lasts 15–25 years depending on wear layer thickness and maintenance. Unlike hardwood, it cannot be refinished — but individual damaged planks can usually be replaced without redoing the entire room.
